Title checks that deserve attention
Name match
The name on the title should make sense with the person selling the car and the payment recipient.
VIN match
Compare the VIN on the title with the dashboard, door label, listing, photos, and any history report you review.
Lien status
If there is a lien, ask how payoff and release will be handled before money changes hands.
Brand language
Look for words such as salvage, rebuilt, flood, lemon, not actual mileage, or similar title notes.
Odometer notes
Mileage inconsistency is not automatically fraud, but it is a reason to slow down and compare documents.
Blank or altered fields
Unclear signatures, overwritten numbers, missing buyer/seller details, or pressure to "fix it later" are red flags.
Questions to ask the seller
Is the title in your name? Is there any lien? Has the vehicle ever had a branded title? Can I compare the VIN on the title with the vehicle before payment?
If the seller avoids basic document questions, the next best step is usually not negotiation. It is distance.
Optional VIN screening step
VIN Checkup can help you review vehicle information before deciding whether the title story and listing deserve a visit.
