Before you meet the seller
Ask for the VIN early
Use the VIN to compare the listing, title story, mileage, and vehicle details before spending time on a visit.
Confirm title basics
Ask whether the title is clean, rebuilt, salvage, financed, or in another person's name. Any mismatch needs slower review.
Keep payment simple
Avoid rushed deposits, unusual payment apps, gift cards, wire pressure, or sellers who will not document the transaction.
Request maintenance proof
Photos of records, receipts, or service history help you compare the seller story with the actual vehicle condition.
Plan a safe meeting
Meet in a public place, bring someone if possible, and do not carry more money or personal information than needed.
Set walk-away rules
Decide in advance what makes you stop: missing VIN, title confusion, refused inspection, or pressure to pay before review.
Questions worth asking
Why are you selling it? How long have you owned it? Is the title in your name? Has it been in an accident? Are there current mechanical issues? Can a mechanic inspect it before purchase?
None of these questions proves the car is good. They simply help you decide whether the listing deserves the next step.
Optional VIN screening step
