The quick checklist
1. Ask for the VIN
The VIN lets you research the vehicle before emotions, scarcity, or seller pressure take over.
2. Compare mileage
Look for mileage that makes sense against age, maintenance records, photos, and seller statements.
3. Review title context
Ask about title status, liens, accident history, flood history, salvage branding, and registration details.
4. Check seller behavior
If a seller avoids basic questions or rushes payment, slow the process down.
5. Plan inspection
A report can help you ask better questions, but it does not replace a mechanic or legal/title review.
6. Decide before visiting
Write your walk-away conditions before seeing the car in person.
Questions to ask the seller
Can you share the VIN? Is the title in your name? Are there liens? Has the vehicle been in an accident? Why are you selling? Do you have maintenance records? Can I arrange an independent inspection?
Red flags
No VIN, mismatched title names, pressure to send a deposit, vague accident answers, unusually low price, refusal of inspection, missing maintenance records, or photos that hide key areas.
Optional tool: VIN Checkup
VIN Checkup can help you review information associated with a vehicle identification number before making a decision. Use it as one input, not as your only source.
